 comparators
A comparator is a job assessed as having equivalent work or work of equal value to the job being undertaken in a different sector of the local authority - for example a nurse may have an engineer as a comparator. Once a comparator is found for a position, the two jobs should receive equal pay.
 job evaluation
A process of evaluating and establishing parity between the work undertaken in different employment areas within a local authority. For example a seamstress might have a wall washer as her "comparator". The two grades are then supposed to receive equal pay. The job evaluation is usually carried out by the local authority in consultation with the trade unions.
